Film | Strange Movies
Hi, it's Andrea and this is my first Sunday post! On reflection I'm not sure why I haven't always been posting on Sundays, since as it's an end point of the week and I have so so so much more free time. But anyways, you live and you learn.
This week I've decided to write about something a little bit more fun and silly. Weird kids films. All of which I believe to be some sort of social experiment.
So here are 7 films/series' (and a bonus movie) that I think are really just odd.
Side note: I did actually enjoy all of these films, I just think they're so strange.
1. Trolls
Rainbow little things? I mean I genuinely don't know what this film was supposed to be about other than a promotion for selling toys. Was it an ugly vs pretty thing? Was it to prove trolls are not the same as ogres? Was it inspiration for little children; trying to get them to always positive and sing and dance everywhere? WHY WONT YOU SING?!
Diamond guy? Guy Diamond? I don't know but he was weird. The Cloud. What was he all about? The side plot of Lady Glitter Sparkles and the prince was strange to say the least. They were ogres and you're telling me she STILL didn't fit the beauty standards. Not to mention the random Adele cover? Overall this film is the definition of a fever dream.
2. The Bee Movie
Where do I even begin? This film would've made sense if it was to raise awareness about respecting bees; BUT THEN THEY GOT MARRIED? Not only this, but KEN was the mental one. A woman ditches her long term boyfriend for a BEE (A BEE?) and her boyfriend is the one that's supposed to chill. The fact that her standards were that low is insane to me.
Besdies the love story there was this whole "save the bees" message, that they even went to COURT for. And at the start apparently their job involves techy jet packs, AS IF BEES CAN'T FLY? But again the weirdest part is the innuendos between a fully grown woman and a ...bee.
3. Sing!
Animals singing and doing random musical acts. This film was basically The Greatest Showman but with animals. ALSO, the amount of criminal activity in this was insane. Like what do you mean there's bears chasing after Peter Griffin the mouse and Eggsy the gorilla is supposed to be serving jail time.
The grandma is world famous and apparently sings Golden Slumbers better that Paul McCartney?
All Johnny can sing is Elton John- which SURPRISE SURPRISE he's played by Taron Edgerton (aka. Elton John in a AU). I also don't understand the hate for Meena, I guess people are just jealous of her talent?
There are no humans- all animals- and yet none of them are vegetarian? However, despite all this I do thoroughly enjoy this film and the musical performances.
4. The Emoji Movie
Their job is to stand there all day and look appealing to use? Genuinely what was the point of this film? Dancing hands, random games of Just Dance, walking through the phone? In no way shape or form was this film necessary or even just a reasonably good idea. I was going to say the only enjoyable part was when they traveled through the internet but that's not even this film- that's Wreck it Ralph. Overall there's nothing objectively wrong with the film (like a bee marrying a woman) but it's just so unnecessary and strange.
5. Alvin and the Chipmunks (film and series)
Now don't get me wrong I LOVE these films and the series but there is so much wrong with them. Random group of CHIPMUNKS can sing and somehow manage to become world famous pop stars? AND NO ONE BATS AN EYELID? Like does everyone think it's some sort of AI or something? Dave is the only person who finds it remotely weird but no one else; and even HE lets them live with him in the end. Ian sees rodents as a pathway to success instead of shooing them from his office? WHO LOOKS AT A BUNCH OF CHIPMUNKS AND THINKS THAT THEY CAN BE WORLD FAMOUS POP STARS?
But that's just the films, in the series they go to school? SCHOOL? They're given tiny desks and are taught maths with everyone else. But that's not all because they're actually POPULAR? Random teenage girls go on dates with them and treat them as if they're not furry animals OR less than 2ft tall?
So so so strange and yet I eat it up every time.
6. Minions/Despicable Me
This film is about yellow creature beings who are in love with bananas and speak gibberish. And yet they are the most popular chosen side kicks for villains? Not to mention they're literally EVIL. Forget about the purple versions, they're evil from the START. Breaking into the Tower of London, attempting to steal the moon, LITERALLY BECOMING KING. And the thing is, when Bob becomes King, NO ONE CARES?
KING BOB, KING BOB, KING BOB, KING BOB!
While Lizzie was sat in a PUB? However, other than the fact they're yellow monster things that have been around since the beginning of time, there isn't really much else strange about these films to be honest.
7. Boss Baby (series)
Literally what on earth were the writers thinking when creating this? Don't get me wrong I loved this series when I was younger but WHY? It's about literal babies who somehow have full time jobs. Do they not grow up? Is every baby a worker and they just forget about it when they grow up? HOW DOES NO ONE REALISE? I genuinely believe this was created to introduce a cute brother/brother dynamic (which was successful) but other than that, WHAT WAS THIS? What do you mean the whole plot line was just this 18 month old group of babies trying to make sure they were more liked than dogs??
8. Shrek- Bonus!
Fairytale- but with a twist! This film is literally just about the fact that a woman will pick an OGRE over a short guy. Was this film made to prove that everyone has feelings (or even layers)? Was it to present diversity? Or was dreamworks just after a film that did as well as a disney one, so they used their characters? Either way, Shrek, despite how weird it is, is probably one of the most iconic kids films so no matter what message they attempted to put across, it worked. This is only a bonus one because there's not much else to say, I just think it's weird.
Reading this back I realise I sound really grumpy and boring but I promise I actually liked these films (I clearly have low standards). I just also firmly believe that these movies are so so very strange and some (2&4) should probably never have existed. Let me know if you think I missed off any weird films off this list and also other ideas for upcoming posts!
Hope you come again soon, Andrea xx
