Hi, it's Andrea! Hope you're not too tired from the Eurovision last night- I know I am. In relation to the Eurovision though, I've decided that this week I'll give my short and honest opinions on the Grand Final ESC entries. However, I will be grouping some countries as I wrote similar comments for the entries; I will also attach my score sheet if you'd like to see my individual thoughts though. 🫶

First up, we have the classic Euro pop/dance anthems: Norway, Iceland, Finland, Poland, Germany, Malta and Denmark. These songs were all fan favourites from the start and you definitely can see why. Each gives off pure 'Eurovision' vibes with the upbeat music, increasing stage performance and masses of backup dancers. Maybe these weren't the most incredible songs lyrically but I do think they were perfect for the ESC (and maybe should have placed higher). I will also say that a lot of these songs eventually merged together in my mind.

Next are the more underrated euro pop songs: Luxembourg, Spain, San Marino. There's not really much to say about these other than the fact that they're also bops just without the fans. These songs were all honestly so good, they were just hidden by the public's favourites- especially Spain because that was so so good.

Moving on from the Euro pop songs, we have the 'jokes', surprisingly this year this category only had two songs: Estonia and Sweden. Both these songs were extremely catchy and based off of a singular country (even if not its own). Personally, I preferred Estonia as it was funnier but both entries had incredible staging and vibes.

Completely different from these, there are the big (and soft) ballads, which even more surprisingly, there were a lot of this year: Austria, Israel, Greece, Portugal, Italy, Switzerland, Netherlands and France. Each one of these songs were so unique and yet all united in the name of pure emotion. This category does hold my personal favourites which were Greece (totally not biased 👀) , Italy and Portugal. These three entries just stuck out to me for their incredible lyrics, musicality and performance. From Greece's incredible vocals, Italy's simple yet beautiful lyrics and Portugal's soft yet powerful performance; these three were definitely my favourites. However, my honerable mention does go to the Netherlands for the most amazing fusion between contemporary pop and ballad.

The last genre category is similar to the ballads but slightly more pop-esque. For example: Ukraine, Albania, Latvia and Lithuania. Each of these songs felt very special and unique compared to the classic Euro Pop and ballads. Each song had great lyrics and music but with a slightly more contemporary rock feel, rather than dance. This made the songs stand out and definitely more memorable in my opinion.

Now you're probably wondering where the UK and Armenia are, and the answer would be that they're on my 'did not like' list. There is honestly not a lot to say about either of these entries other than the fact I didn't like them. In my opinion, the UK singer's vocals were incredible but the song itself was dreadful and Armenia's definitely sounded too much like a Bear Grylls song- something I'm not a fan of.

Overall though, I really enjoyed this year's songs and some of these will definitely go up there with my all time favourites like My Number One, Mon Amour, Fairytale and Viola.

I hope you enjoyed my recap of the ESC, I'm  so excited for next year already! I'll be honest, next Sunday I think will be another music post since there's recently been lots of new releases.

Come back soon, Andrea x
